PROBLEMS INVOLVING THE SUPPLY OF HOUSING IN THE BOSTON REGION SECTION FOUR: PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE MAINTENANCE OF THE EXISTING STOCK OF HOUSING AND THE PRESERVATION AND REVITALIZATION OF NEIGHBORHOODS Introduction Over the past fifteen years there ha
...s been a rapid decentralization of the region's population. Large numbers of predominantly white families have moved from Boston and other older urban areas to suburban communities. Elderly and less affluent households were for the most part left behind in the older areas. This loss in population in the region's urban centers has been partly replaced by the inmigration of minority households, who on the average, are poorer than the families who have moved out. Another phenomenon has been the substantial increase in the number of students and young adults in the older communities, drawn to these areas because of the large number of schools and universities, as well as the availability of rental units.
