' He boldly stated his belief that the negroes would go to work for wages as soon as they were released from the terrors of the whip. It was proposed with splendid generosity to compensate the slave-owners for the loss of their "property" — their human property — their supposed ownership of the thews and muscles of their fellow-men. Crowded public meetings were held all over the kingdom; and in 1833 the Government found themselves compelled to take up the question, and introduce a Bill providing for the immediate abolition of slavery on payment of ;£"20, ooo, ooo to the planters.
