To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

This forms the inner, and the concentric space between the two, the middle, ward.
CAERPHILLY CASTLE. 13 The MIDDLE WARD thus presents four divisions, towards the cardinal points, all forming terraces of from sixteen to twenty yards broad, and the opposite sides being of nearly equal length. Upon the east and west are the gate- houses ; on the south, offices, and a water-gate ; and, on the north, an open terrace, overlooking the outer defences of the castle on that side.
The eastern gate-house i
...s formed of two low towers, with half round projections towards the moat, and a portal between the two. The walls are thick, and there is a lodge on each side, lighted by three loops. Above these lodges was the battlement. On the north side is a square building, the use of which is unknown. This gate-house was connected with that of the inner ward, and between the two there seem to have been side doors.
One of these, on the south, led to the water tank, lined with masonry, fifty feet long by twenty wide.
