If a child is first taught to perform his duties mechanically without understanding their reasons and aims — save only in the case of those virtues which, like obedience, rarely conflict with any other, and which, if they do, as a rule show clearly what is after all the right course to adopt — one of two evils is likely to happen when at last the child reaches the independent years : he will either, from not understanding the grounds on which he finds that, while some acts are still tabooed, ot...hers he may now do, come to the conclusion that morality is con- ventional and kick over the traces altogether ; or, which is perhaps the commoner case, remain all his life the slave of others' opinions, with no light by which to trace his own path. The latter is the state of the world at large, but of the former I have marked a rising danger where perhaps you might least expect to find it — in our public schools. In the hope of checking other serious evils the modern theory seems to be that it is good to provide some forced occupation, not in itself of necessity unpleasant, to cover the whole of a boy's time.
