But as, in politics, some men desired to resist the advance of revolution by conceding necessary reforms, while others imagined that revolution could best be checked by resisting all further change, so, in religion, one party desired to save the Church by admitting all the friends of Christianity into its fold, while another party thought that its defence could not be undertaken at all unless every member of the garrison was content to subordinate reason to faith, and to serve, without questioning, under the standard of authority.
