....m.; there was a strange lurid appear- ance in the sky between 4.30 and 5. 30 p.m., and at 5.45 p.m. a furious hurricane struck the town from the N, or NNE. The worst part did not last long ; and the wind calmed down at 8.30 p.m.
10 The wind in the morning was probably 8o miles an hour at its greatest ; this would give a pressure of 23 lbs. per square foot ; the force of the wind in the evening w^as about double the force of the wind in the morning ; this would give 46 lbs. per square fdot, or 114 miles an hour; and these estimates are in accordance with those made at the Kempshot Observatory.
