Having obtained very satisfactory results with the ferrocyanide membranes it was decided to investigate some of the cobalticyan- ides. Since cobalticyanide of potassium in not a common labora- tory reagent, it was necessary to prepare it for the intended work. As text- books give rather meager directions for its preparation, it is not out of place to mention here a few precau- tions, which were found necessary
... in order to obtain satisfactory results.
The salt was made by treating a solution of a cobalt salt (chlo- ride or nitrate, were both used in this investigation), with a solution of potassium cyanide until all the precipitate, which was formed in the beginning, was redissolved. The precipitate formed on adding the potassium cyanide solution is the protocyanide of cobalt, and this redissolves in the excess of potassium cyanide, forming the potassium cobalticyanide.
The reactions which take place are : 2.
