While the AustraUans were making it certain that the enemy could not escape through their screen, firm and gallant work was being done to the south of Damascus. The 14th Brigade of the 6th Cavalry Division, sent from the western column of Desert Mounted Corps to cut off the Turkish IVth Army moving through Kiswe to Damascus, hit the enemy very hard. I was standing at the khan of Shiha when the order was issued to the brigade, and if all the men had been already in the saddle they could not have... got away more quickly. They moved off to the east between us and Kaukab well before the latter place had been charged by the Australians, and one could follow their rapid movements between the woods and the red-roofed station of Kiswe by high pillars of dust raised by galloping horses. They had guns with them, and while these put in a hot fire, the brigade seized the hill Jebel el Aswad astride the Kiswe- Damascus road and cut the enemy column in half.
Leaving the rear portion to be dealt with later by the 4th Cavalry Division they went after a disorganised mob of Turks running to the hills on the north-east and down the main road to Damascus.
