This couple is applied PROPERTIES OF SOLIDS. 285 by hanging a weight from the rim of the wheel. It should be noted that the moment of the couple which produces torsion in a rod, or the moment of the couple which a rod is able to exert in virtue of torsion imposed on it, is usually called the torque applied to, or exerted by, the rod.
