There is naturally a great degree of obscurity in the history of a foundation so remote ; but we are informed that originally, it was endowed for Bene- dictine monks. In the year 1139, the purpose of it was changed, by granting it to the Cistercians, in consequence of one of those revolutions, wh
...ich have so frequently sequestered the property of the church by transferring it from one set of hands, or one re- ligious order, to another more favoured by the ru- ling powers. By the present instance, we perceive that such transfers were not confined to the age of the reformation. With the general appearance of this Abbey in its original state, we have nothing to do, for we can now only speak, or judge of it 168 ST. MARY'S ABBEY.
