Next thing I knew, they’d gotten a babysitter and showed up 218 diane chamberlain with a bowl of gulf shrimp and a bottle of sparkling cider. We sat on the edge of the roof for an hour at least, talking and eating, dropping shrimp tails onto the patio below for me to clean up the next morning. Maybe Laurel had been uncomfortable sitting between Jamie and me, but she hadn’t been at all afraid to sit on the edge of the roof.
