Some, indeed, hoped that he might make a failure, for the people of this com- munity had little regard for the institution. After invoking the divine blessing upon the candidates and administrator, they descended with trembling steps into the water. When a sufficient depth was reached, in as solemn and reverential a manner as possible the person was buried in th...e baptismal grave, raised from it, and led to the shore with a relief of mind which is easy to imagine. The second candidate was led forward and both went down into the water. The first was so easily bap- tized that, not being on his guard, he failed to entirely submerge the second, who was very tall. He had partly raised him out of the water, when Father Rhodes shouted: " Bro. Belding, bury that man!" On this advice, he was again low- ered into the water and buried. This, while it was very embarrassing, taught him a lesson which he never forgot.
