Distribution. — The number of known localities in the United States at which ball-clays occur is small, and are shown in Figs. 36 and 55. They are obtained from the Tertiary (Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee) and Cretaceous (New Jersey) formations, and in residual deposits derived from Palaeozoic limestones (Missouri).
170 CLAYS Fire-clays The term fire-clay, properly speaking, refers to those clays capable of withstanding a high degreee of heat, but it is unfortunately most loosely used by American clay-workers, and many plastic materials which have absolutely no claim to refractoriness are included under this head.
