To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
His article Pitt and Fox in the autumn number of the Quarterly Review, 1855,* a good specimen of his essay style at its best, is not only packed with unhackneyed details, but is full of autobiographical interest. As a drawing-room bard Bulwer may have had Byron too much before him ; in his training for political life, the second Pitt remained for years his chief model. As a Greek scholar, notwith- standing the depreciatory remarks of his rival Fox, WiUiam Pitt was first-rate. So Bulwer also had... made a good Grecian of himself. The " grand old man " f who in his youth had been fond of versifying, amateur theatricals, and play writing, had encouraged his favourite second son to compose not only poems but a drama in rhymed couplets, still, or but recently, treasured among the Stanhope manuscripts at Chevening. The facts now mentioned were not ignored by Bulwer-Lytton ; long afterwards he drew attention to them in a Quarterly Review article on Pitt and Fox in 1855.
