He very seldom, how- ever, has occasion to repent of his caution, and is generally disposed rather to value himself upon the prudence of his reserve. Though not guilty, he feels himself to be in the highest degree, what the ancients called, piacular, and is anxious and eager to make every sort of atonement in his power.
