What reading level is Essex book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

At Clacton-on-Sea the cliffs are crumbling away in many places, and a few years ago several hundred acres of land were ruined by the great flood. Sir Charles Lyell, the great geologist, examined the coast from Harwich southwards, between the years 1829 and 1838, and he had fears that the isthmus on which Harwich stands would, at no remote period, be- come an island. His fears have been justified to this extent, that between 1824 and 1841 the Essex promontory at Beacon Cliff lost no less than 35...0 feet.
While the Essex coast is losing in some places, there THE COAST 53 has been a corresponding gain in others. Land that had been overwhelmed by the sea has been regained, and specially noticeable is this in the Thames estuary. There land which was once under water has been won from the sea by the unceasing toil of man. It is worthy of remark that this work was accomplished in several instances by foreign engineers, especially those from Holland and Flanders. Vermuyden and Joas Croppenburg are two names that are worthy of remembrance, for they reclaimed marshlands, and rescued and embanked Canvey Island in the Thames.
