John was already dressed—black turtleneck sweater, black jeans, and waterproof black hiking boots—as if it was Halloween and he was going out as a burglar. He was putting some things into a small red nylon pack sack and mumbling to himself like an old man whose memory was falling apart. On his desk top was a row of what he would call “items.”
