But when she opened the door to her mother’s house that night and the familiar musty, sour smell rose to greet her; when she flicked on the light in the dining room and felt the room, noisy with doodads, with heavy, outdated furniture, with violently patterned draperies, press in around her: then she felt as trapped and yet somehow as emptied as she had as a young woman planning her escape.
