For this purpose it shall -have authority to inflict such punish- ments as have been heretofore authorized in the Department of Arts, or may be hereafter authorized by the Board of Trus- tees.

Punishments shall be exclusively directed to a sense of duty and the principles of honor and shame.
They shall consist of private reprimand by the Dean of the Faculty, of reprimand from the Dean by the direction of the Faculty or the Executive Committee thereof after having heard the case, an
...d if the Faculty or Executive Committee deem it expedient, the case shall be reported to the Provost, when the punishment shall consist of private reprimand by the Provost ; and, if the Provost shall deem it expedient to lay the case again before the Faculty or the Executive Committee thereof, in which the offender is a student, he may do so, when the pun- ishment shall consist of suspension for a limited time ; of sus- pension until further order of the Faculty or the Executive Committee thereof, of dismission and of expulsion, provided that the penalty of dismission shall not be inflicted unless the offender is guilty of gross moral delinquency, or unless he has shown himself to be incorrigible, and provided also that the penalty of expulsion, which shall render the offender utterly disqualified for re-admission, shall not be inflicted unless first sanctioned by a vote of the Board of Trustees.
