94 GOING ABROAD OVERLAND How far we were from home, at what a unique point we had arrived, how strikingly East and West here come face to face, how sharply Occident meets Orient, how here the frozen North and plain- swept South both overlap, and how the Fin de Steele meets the very Ancient of Days, was well illustrated in the strange admixture at the entrance on arrival. For both natural and artificial fea- tures, both the works of Nature and of man in taming nature, combine to accentuate these contrasts.
