the general one in the eleventh century. The Maronites wear it thus to the present day ; and the Armenians use a kind of amice, called a vakass, to which a breast plate is attached, and which is put on over the stoicharion, the oriental alb. Otherwise this vestment is unknown in the East, amongst the Greeks, Syrians, and Copts.
Early names for the amice, which means a " wrap " (from amictus), were an
...agolagium or anagolagus, a neckerchief, and humeral or superhumeral, from the fact that the lower part covered the shoulders. It was also used as a temporary covering for the head ; at S. Maurice, Angers, the sacred ministers at Mass kept it over the head until the singing of the Sanctus, when they turned it back over the chasuble ; and in many French churches, before the biretta came into general use, it was customary to go to the altar with the amice over the head. On the Percy tomb in Beverley Minster is the figure of a priest with the amice apparently worn in this manner A relic of this custom remains in the fact that the priest in assuming it rests it upon his head while adjusting it, and then turn or rolls it back, so as to cover the back of the stole.
