New England has one acre in sixteen of its improved area in wheat, maize, oats, rye, barley and buckwheat; while the remaining three North Atlantic states have one acre in four. This adaptation to the growth of the concentrated foods is most marked in southeastern Pennsylvania and in western New York and Pennsylvania, where the physiographical features are similar to those of the Ohio Valley.
