During the early years of the manu- facture the extended use of iodine, principally in the production of ani- line dyes, caused sudden fluctuations in its price, while the price of the raw material remained practically unchanged. This involved many manufacturers in heavy losses, the profits under high prices usually falling to speculators, while the manufacturer was left to sustain the industry when prices were low.
