During the earlier years of the company's existence it was an exceedingly popular organization in society. Many of its members ranked high in the social scale, and frequent parties and entertainments were the offspring of their social disposi- tions. Nearly all the members were young, and buoyant of spirit, and nothing was more enjoyable to them than a mirthful " frolic." By the townsfolk, it was considered a mark of dis- tinction to receive an invitation to a ball or party conducted under the auspices of Company E, of the 1st Regiment.
