Our lamented friend was, indeed, a martyr-student.
As I visited him during his protracted illness, and observed his bright eye, his pale visage, his weakened frame, and his faltering step, I often in mind applied to him... those masterly lines of a titled poet upon the death of Henry Kirke White, whom our departed scholar in his devotion to study, in the constituents of his humble and fervid piety, and in his untimely end, strongly resembled : — " Unhappy White ! while hfe was in its spring, And thy young muse just waved her joyous wing, The spoiler came ; and, all thy promise fair, Has sought the grave, to sleep forever there.
Oh ! what a noble heart was here undone.
