The main product of our country, especially of the west and south, being from the soil, it follows that the farmer must pay by far the greatest portion of tariff duties. The burdens imposed on him are more than his just share. In the first place he pays directly the duty charged upon what he con sumes, and then pays, indirectly, much the larger part of the duties paid in the first instance by others.
