Barney and I hung onto the sides and Ray drove the little team from a precarious seat on top of the crates. With a lot of slipping, sliding and plenty of luck, we made it down to the pickup. It was after midnight when we finally arrived in Big Timber.
The next morning, quite a group of interested sportsmen accompanied us. We crossed the Yellowstone River and went up to Sweet Grass Canyon on the east slope of the b...eautiful Crazy Mountains. We found a good release site just above the Brannin Ranch where a steep slope led to the rocky peaks above.
Everything was going well. The big billy lost no time getting out of his crate and up the mountain. One of the nannies and the yearling quickly followed. Then came problems. The other nanny had been lying in her crate, so we had to pull her out by the horns. But she continued to lie motionless, with her eyes closed. I remember thinking — here we are making our first mountain goat transplant with a lot of folks looking on, and now this fine animal might die.
