J. D. Little, an engineer hired by Sage Creek Coal to study the proposed project, told a Lethbridge (Alta.) Herald reporter in January that the diversion would help minimize pollution from sur- LFernie, B.C face run-off "which couldn't help but get in the creek unless it's moved." Bill Burge, an attorney in Vancouver, B.C., and an assistant secretary of Sage Creek Coal, told Montana Outdoors in February the purpose of the diversion, "in simple terms," is to "get the creek out of the way." If th
...e creek isn't there, the company won't have to go through any "complicated procedures to keep it clean," he said.
Howard DeBeck, comptroller of the B.C. Water Rights Branch, said diverting the creek would also allow the company to dump overburden removed from the unearthed mountains into the area vacated by the creek.
In the long run, the proposed diversion would help make possible continuation of the company's plans for a major mining operation in the area. If realized, the plans would call for a town of up to 4,000 persons, a rail line into the mine, a coal cleaning plant, power lines, blacktop highways and, undoubtedly, an alteration of life styles, natural beauty and resources.
