They utge that 26 individuals now own 815,178 acres of land in the State, and that under the competi- tive-bidding system they will gobble up most of the land under this grant. How they acquired their present large holdings wiU be de- scribed by Dr. Hendrick, who has made a most careful study of the question and who is most deeply interested, not only in the welfare of the university but the welfare of the public schools and the tax- payers of the State. The 26 individuals referred to, under th...e law, are entitled to purchase only 26 sections. If they purchase more, it must be in violation of the law and through conspiracies with other individuals and through fraud.
As I have before stated, the legislators of the State of Nevada can make any attempt to commit such conspiracies or fraud so dan- gerous and expensive that no men who would have the means of per- petrating such frauds would be rash enough to undertake them.
Outside of these 26 landholders in the State, there are 2,689 farmers in the State who own 2,699,580 acres.
