Pharmacology.
Belladonna or atropine administered internally will arrest the flow of saliva and cause dryness of the mouth ; but inasmuch as they also arrest other... secre- tions, and are powerful poisons, their use for such purposes is inadvisable.
Therapeutics.
Y^ gr. of atropine sulphate, dissolved in a few drops of water and applied to the gum by means of a wad of blotting paper, will locally arrest the secretions from that portion of the gum in a little while, and is sometimes of use when inserting cement fillings without the use of the rubber dam.
Opium. See pp. 102 and 174.
Pharmacology.
Opium or morphia taken internally ARRESTS THE SECRETION of saliva by its specific action.
