61.
In order still further to elucidate the advantages of this con- struction, let us suppose a fire-proof building, of any given length, 154 ON THE CONSTBUCTION OP and 48 feet wide, having only one row of columns in the middle, and wrought«iron beams, 22 feet 6 inches long, extending from the centre columns to the walls on each side. Now, on this plan, if the beams were rolled according to the form given in fig. 37, p. 86, they would be equal to a breaking-weight of 13 tons in the middle, or 2
...6 tons equally distributed over the surface of the beam. This would almost give sufficient security for the support of brick arches of the usual construction. But assuming wrought-iron plates one-fourth of an inch thick, 3 feet wide, and bent in the segmental form of an arch, 10 feet wide, with ribs of T iron, as shown at d, d, e/, d, e/, figs. 62 and J^ig. 02, 63, and in section, as represented in figs. 64 and 65 ; also at fig. 66, where one whole arch is shown, with the filling up of the haunches, flf, «,«, flf, &c., with concrete, to level the surface, preparatory for the recep- tion of the floors ; — this will be found a floor of exceedingly light construc- tion, perfectly fire-proof, and contain- ing all the elements of strength and rigidity which can possibly be attained by cast-iron beams and brick arches.
