When we had the good fortune to pass the night in a caravansary, we invariably chose the most dilapidated and de- serted quarters to be found, in preference to the guests' room used by Persian travellers. Even then, from every nook and cranny the heat would bring forth legions of tormentors, who had probably been lying dormant since the days of Shah Abbas, and fell upon us with appetites whetted by their long fast.
I dwell on this rather unpleasant subject at some length, because I have frequen...tly been asked if there is any reason why " tourists," or ladies, should not enjoy the pleasures of travel- ling in Persia, and moreover, because I have never found a book of travel, however eloquent, which in any way does justice to this feature of life in the "Golden East." 148 A PERSIAN CARAVAN The day after leaving Kum we pressed for- ward under a hot sun for four f arsakhs to Rygiert, a large village at the foot of the trail leading into the mountains. The condition of the road was such that we arrived at Rygiert some time after nightfall, and were forced to put up with the only lodgings we could Snd, in the stable of a half -ruined caravansary.
