I might exhibit to you many other examples of the folly and loss of " protection " — as the high duty on foreign salt, which, Ist, destroyed some part of our foreign commerce, where our ships were able to carry an outward cargo cheaply only on condition of bring- ing home salt from Liverpool or the West Indies ; and, 2d, actually enabled a combination of salt monopolists, two or three great companies, to close some of the more important of our own salt-works, and thus lessen the supply to the American people.
