From such charges, which equalled, even if they did not exceed, the prices charged by the President, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Cosway was enabled to accumulate a considerable fortune, the whole of which he bequeathed to his widow.
His character was a complex and curious 68 MINIATURES.
mixture. He was vain and pompous to the last degree, affedled and conceited, but withal very kind-hearted, generous, and ready to help. Usually a bright, gay little man, re- joicing in his success, he was speedily over- come by misfortune and easily dejedled.
