Coke: He telephoned me and asked if I would accept an appointment in his administration as director of the Department of Agriculture^ This in one way surprised me and in another way it didn't. I had not been a candidate for the directorship. As a matter of fact, I really would have been just as happy not to have been selected. At rib time did I ask anyone to put in a good word for me. I did not know the governor. I had heard him speak, but I had never met him. So it was the influence of others that must have caused him to select me.
