But a select scientifi...c high- priesthood, which should adopt the theological ethics of Professor Clifford, would find nothing within itself to control its confidence in its own infallibility, or to limit the means or the inclination to execute its remorseless decrees. The city of Paris has more than once been the wit- ness of what each of these priesthoods could be and do. The massacre of St. Bartholomew's is often referred to as an example of what priestly fanaticism in religion could inspire. But, terrible as was this scene, it does not compare with those other spectacles of cruelty and horror in the same city which the priesthoods of atheistic, ethical, and political science have sanctioned if they have not inspired.
