The Italian Renaissance became more universal and more strongly marked in the works of the sculptors that followed. This was due to the influence of Michael Angelo, which in the sixteenth century, in Spain, attained a power elsewhere un- known outside of Italy. There was a special reason for this. Alonso B...erruguete, sculptor, painter, and archi- tect, stands as the representative of this Michael- Angelesque influence, and his work is typical of the manner of his period, especially of the grotesque style which grew out of the Italian, and must be associated with his name. Berruguete was born at Paredes de Nava about the year 1480. He was the son of Pedro Berruguete, the king's painter, from whom he received his first lessons in art. On his father's death he went to Italy, where he at once became the pupil of Michael Angelo.
