A different use ...of the metrical pauses also, immediately felt by the reader but not easily described, adds a heavy, brooding quality to the rhythm quite foreign to Browning s impulsive temperament. Alternat ing with these descriptive cantos is a series of episodes, in which the narrative parts are in a common six-line stanza (ababcc), while the con fessions, so to speak, of the dramatis persona vary in metrical form according to their mood. The whole poem is like the phantasmagoria of a fever subdued to mathematical restraint, or the clamour of mad grief trained into remorseless logic.
