It is plain to see wdiere the difficulty arises. I...t comes from a species of extremism, peculiar to each section of the Union. From this extremism has sprung that most baneful of all ideas, the idea of sectionalism ^ of geograpliical parties, against which we have been warned by the Father of our Country, and which he seemed to foresee as the rock of our future danger. This sectionalism claims on one side everything for the North, and on the other everything for the South. Hence it is the natural mother of national feud and discord. Here are our Scylla and Charybdis.
