In the treatment of cancer, therefore, we must needs employ measures to destroy these Saccharomycetes simul- taneously with our endeavour to restore the functional activity of the thyroid. Now the most potent agent, so far as we know, to accompUsh the destruction of these organisms is one or other of the salicylates.
Salicylate of soda has been employed with varying success, but for some years past I have preferred aspirin, which is not so liable to upset the stomach as the other salts of salic...ylic acid.

It would appear, therefore, that the prime factor in the production of these two diseases — and I would also include gout — is one and the same. In the case of rheumatism and gout, however, the more serious effects of the poison would seem to be neutralised to a large extent by its entering into combination with the alkaline constituents of the blood, forming certain salts which are soluble in warm fluids, but deposit when the tempera- ture is reduced.
