Both are very picturesque, and I doubt not would make good soldiers in the field. The Spahis, especially, are what may be called a na...tural product of the desert. They may almost be said to have been born in the saddle, accustomed as they are from early boy- hood to the wild riding of the plains, which makes them as much at home on horseback as the Cossacks of Russia or our American Indians. But this training of so many thousands of natives to arms would be in itself a new danger, were not the THE ROBBERS' DEN 87 greatest precautions taken that the skill and power thus attained should not be turned on the wrong side.
