Another poet with a connection with Philadelphia was "Tom" Moore, who was in America in 1804 and went about extensively, getting even to what was in that day the wilderness of Lake Erie. But it was, as he wrote, at Philadelphia that he "passed the few agreeable moments which my tour through the States afforded me, " the rest of the United States being, to quote his own words further, but a "melancholy, heartless waste. " On leaving the city he wrote some pleasant lines in regard to his impres-

" In Fairmount Park is preserved an old cottage which is called "Tom Moore's cottage, " but with no particular reason, except that, in the course of his stay of ten days in the city, he was once in a while 193 THE BOOK OF PHILADELPHIA within the limits of what is now the park, and visited at the mansion known as Belmont.
