Vicky had told me to sleep as long as I wanted, another unknown luxury, and during the half-hour that I lay there, enjoying the warm expanse, the only sounds were those of a rooster crowing in the distance and, nearby, the cawing of rooks. Downstairs my cautious “Hello” was met by silence.

It was like two stories and too long.

I was so happy that the story wrapped up the way it did- Gemma's character was lovely & so troubled at the same time. This book was very well written and hard to put down. I agree, the second half slowed down quite a bit, but the ending was well worth it.
