The Germans will be jDumping shell into us and our guns won't reach them by a couple of miles. " T...hat is exactly what did happen ; and the poor boy, with 900 other brave officers and men, went to the bottom of the ocean. A sensible Board of Admiralty could have averted this catastrophe. The remark, " Battleships are of no damned use, " made by (as Admiral Waymouth says) some irresponsible midshipman, has at any rate called into existence a very strong Parlia- mentary Committee to consider it.
Admiral Waymouth says that I am not adding to my reputation in refusing to give evidence before the political gentlemen on this Com- mittee.
