The first plan of the investigator was to have office hours for about two hours a day, so that all families applying for aid might be referred to (88) THE IOWA PLAN 39 her by the overseer. This method would have given opportu- nity to secure family data and to get in touch with the family in an unobtrusive way. As the overseer was not in favor of the plan, visiting in the homes was begun at once. The investiga- tor's comi...ng had been heralded in the newspapers, everyone knew the purpose of the investigation, and it was currently predicted that the families would refuse to give information. This proved to be a false prophecy. The families received the investigator in good spirit, and only in a few places was there any hesitancy in giving the data asked.
Seventy-two cases were listed. One of these had received tlie amount credited to her, a dollar and a half, not as aid for her- self, but in payment for work done for others.
