He was admitted to the bar of this State as an attorney in November, 1853, and as a counselor in Febru- ary, 1857, and after receiving his license to practice remained for some time in Mr. Bentley 's office while the great case of Gough vs. Bell was in progress, in which Mr. Bentley was the "power behind the throne. " He devoted much time to the important cjuestion of real estate law and riparian ...right. S involved in that case, and these and similar lines of work ultimately led him to direct his practice to those branches of real estate, ecjuity, and corporation law which he has since pursued. In these specialties he is widely recognized as an authority. For sev- eral years, particularly before the number of vice-chancellors was in- creased, he was extensively occupied in hearing equity cases as advis- or}' master, and among other matters had occasion to pa. Ss upon more than 600 divorce suits, on which subject he prepared some valuable and interesting statistics.
