They bear the blessed Cross in their lives, while their lips thunder curses against the doctrine. Their own glorious self-denial is their own glorious self-assertion. After all, there exists a great deal of beautiful faith in the fiercest Agnos- ticism, and the most rabid unbelievers extract at least as much comfort from the Unknowable as we do from the Knowable.
