We may here end our account of South Africa in the nineteenth century. The English still have to achieve paci- fication in the Transvaal ; that is the affair of the military commanders, but reconcijiation may be the work of years ; it will need great prudence and a Christian spirit, and it will be the task, less of the government than of individuals. Orange River Colony will be more easily reconciled than the Transvaal. It was led into the war partly by racial feeUng, partly by the ambition of its President and his offi- cials.
