It was carefully opened; and although nearly 130 years had elapsed since it was first placed in the ' Vide page 24, &c. [1714, ground, the body within was in so remarkable a state of preservation, that its identity was at once determined by the resemblance of the features to the picture of Lord Lexington's son, which is now in the gallery at Kelham. On the death of his son, Lord Lexington, who was himself dangerously ill, solicited his recall, and returned to England. Tindal states that on the removal of Lord Oxford, in the following year (1714), from the post of Lord High Treasurer, Lord Lexington was named as likely to hold high office in the Government about to be formed under the auspices of Lord Bolingbroke ; ' but the sudden illness and death of the Queen defeated the intrigue.
