But Van den Berg... was told by Hadramut colonists in Java that it is possible to go from the Wadi Hadramut to Mascat in fifteen days, and in some uncertain time to Riad, but that there was no track and "no commerce on either route. This awful Waste, of whose main expanse we have heard no- thing but vague reports of shifting sands more bottomless than those of the northern Nefud, piled higher and more deeply pitted with fiilj's, sends up a long tongue to north- east which reaches even to the Wadi er Rumma, and thereby is hardly divided from the eastward offshoots of the northern Nefud.
